September 2015 Prayer Letter

Dear Praying Friends,

It is hard to believe that the summer is drawing to a close. I hope that this letter finds you rejoicing in the faithfulness of God. I am getting excited about starting school again next week. I’m looking forward to an expanded role as a leader in middle school discipleship. I will also be continuing my duties as a substitute teacher. I am so grateful to be able to be a part of a Christian community such as the Potter’s House Christian school.

I continue to be grateful for the opportunities God has given me to preach his word. The opportunities at Mel Trotter ministries and Rest Haven Homes are still going strong. We are in the process of adding some new members to our Jail ministry team and I am very excited about that. Serving alongside like-minded brothers in Christ is a true blessing of life on this earth.

I would ask that you would pray for me as I am seeking more opportunities to speak and I’m also open to a ministry -related job that would complement my ministry well and allow me a more stable income. I am extremely grateful for God’s watch care over me but I am also mindful that wisdom is needed as I look to and plan for the future.

One area where I am hoping to get some opportunities is in speaking to Christian schools. I will be spending time in the next couple of weeks reaching out. Please pray that the right doors will open. I have been very thankful for the podcast ministry that God has given me and over the next several weeks we will be planning our Christmas shows. These are among my favorite to do because they are a major part of why Speaking4him exists. Please pray that God will direct us to the proper content.

As you may have seen, the podcast recently celebrated 150 episodes. Another exciting milestone for speaking4him is that this month we celebrate six years in ministry! Thank you so much to everyone who has prayed for and encouraged us over the years. I say we because this ministry is not about me but rather about him and also as a way to point out the fact that I have had many people working with me throughout this time.

Speaking of needed support, if there is anyone who would like to commit to regularly playing the piano on the second Sunday of each month when I do the service at Rest Haven please let me know. This is a great opportunity for service and fellowship and I would be extremely grateful if you would be willing to help me or if you would pray that God would lead me to a good person to fulfill this task on a regular basis.
As I close I just want to encourage you with the words of Paul “ Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” (I Corinthians 15:58)

What Impact Should A Christian Make?

Over the past week or so there has been an article circulating on the Internet published by Relevant Magazine called “Christians Shouldn’t Be Cultures Morality Police.” While I would agree to a point I think that too many “Christians” today take this to an unhealthy extreme. Because of this, what you are about to read may be one of the most blunt blog posts I have ever written. I do not wish to offend, but neither will I apologize for sharing the truth.

First of all, as I stated in an article several weeks ago I totally agree there is no way that we should expect the world to wholeheartedly embrace a Christian worldview. To do so would be foolish. Paul said “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” (I Corinthians 1:18)

That being said, it continues to amaze and grieve me the number of people who say they are Christians yet think it is okay for babies to be murdered and for marriage to be blasphemed. As I’ve said, supporting and loving non-Christians is not the same as a wholesale acceptance for their activity. It is 100% accurate that Jesus Christ spent time with sinners and that he often spoke very gently to the most despised people in the society in which he resided. It’s very true that he met people where they were but it is also true that he didn’t leave them there.

It is worth noting that in John chapter 8 in addition to saying “neither do I condemn you” Christ also said “go and sin no more.” Both of these messages are important. Also, while it would be wrong of us to expect total perfection on anyone’s part, it is also wrong to put forth the idea (if not in word and by implication) that Christianity can exist without the evidence of a changed life. If nothing changes when you become a Christian, what is the point and who are you actually following?

I have non-Christian friends who I love dearly. I enjoy spending time with them and when we are together I seek to encourage them. I pray for open doors to discuss the things of Scripture and also that God would open their eyes to its truth. I don’t bash them over the head with the Bible but neither do I shy away from what I believe.

Am I perfect? Absolutely not! But if perfection was the standard necessary to preach truth even the apostle Paul would be disqualified. He did not preach truth because he was perfect but rather because he was brought to the truth by the mercy of God and commissioned to share with others what he had learned. I firmly believe that in some ways there is a greater example to the world in admitting our imperfections (and striving to walk worthy in spite of them) then there is in putting up a false front of perfection. Ask anyone who lives with me and they will be glad to share with you my flaws.

As people’s lives change, so should their impact upon the society in which they live. It is worth noting that no society can exist apart from moral standards. Also Christ's followers didn't "turn the word upside down" by staying silent. (Acts 17:6)  I know many people do not like to think about this but whether you like it or not our nation was founded on biblical principles. Our founding fathers begun this nation on the premise that true freedom is found through responsibility. Today we have a large portion of a generation that want freedom but not the responsibility that goes with it. The result is chaos.

I think it’s amazing in the sense that we arrived at a point where somehow it is okay to step away from moral standards while holding to them is wrong. The Scriptures tell us that all life is sacred even in the womb and now technology confirms what the psalmist knew all too well. If you want to continue to carry a banner for abortion I can’t stop you but we are long past the time when you can call it anything less than murder. When our hearts stop beating we are declared dead, yet somehow in the society in which we now find ourselves a beating heart does not constitute life. This must stop!

I want to say a word or two here about homelessness. One of the points that is often brought up is that Christians should care more about the poor. I agree with this but again balance is required in our discussion of this issue. I worked with the homeless population at Guiding Light Mission for a year and a half and I can tell you that while there were a good number of people looking for a hand up there also were a good amount who I knew would stay homeless because they looked to be enabled instead of empowered.

We need to make sure that we are consistently sharing the truth in love. I know that many people approach truth in the wrong way, but that doesn’t negate it. Jesus didn’t die on the cross because he never said anything controversial. He died on the cross because people hated the truth and because it was the only way to deal with the truth that we are all sinners in need of a Savior.

My prayer for you is that you will continue to be steadfast in your proclamation of the truth while being loving to everyone. May God bless you all!

Planned Parenthood Raises An Important Question: Do We Really Value Life?

Over the past several weeks we have seen the release of several videos detailing the behind-the-scenes work of Planned Parenthood. There has been an increasing outrage about this and rightly so. For too long we have simply swept to these issues under the rug. I believe that even pro-lifers such as myself can sometimes be guilty of not realizing the true atrocity of the practice of abortion.

I haven’t watched all of the videos but what I have seen has turned my stomach and made me want to vomit. I shared one of them on my Facebook feed because even though it made me feel physically ill I felt it was something that everyone should watch. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think you should expose your young children to this but I firmly believe that we often spend too much time in a sanitized bubble and fail to grasp the reality of what is going on in our culture.

Just before Jesus died on the cross, rose again, and went back to heaven to be with his Father he prayed for his disciples. In that prayer he did not pray that The Father would take them out of the world but rather that they would be kept from the evil one. (John 17:15) We as Christians have been left in the world for a reason.

Many people speak of the need to preach the gospel and I wholeheartedly agree with this. However I also firmly believe that our dedication to the gospel should lead us into action. It’s not enough to simply speak the truth, we must live it out. The Bible tells us to “plead the cause of the poor and needy” (Proverbs 31:9) and so I believe we must be engaged in the culture before us and stand up for biblical principles. When people ask us why we believe as we do it is the perfect opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.

At that point it is more than just convenient words to say but rather the evidence of a life lived out of conviction for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. There was a contemporary Christian song that was popular when I was growing up which said in effect “I’d rather see a sermon then to hear one any day.” The world desperately needs to see these living sermons!

This brings up another important point. As much as these videos grieve us as we see the world’s blatant disregard for human life (and they should), I also believe they should serve as a catalyst that will drive us as the church into a time of examination on our own attitude toward children. If we want the world to see value in these little ones, we must show this by example.

Sadly, it has become all too easy for the church to adapt to the world’s line of thinking about children. It saddens me when I hear people say that they are waiting for a “more convenient time” to have children or when my brother and sister in law are looked down upon because they have four children.

What have we as a society become when even within the church it seems appropriate to stop God’s blessing of children? I can’t tell you what to do about this issue. It is between you and the Lord. However I would challenge you to examine your motives. You may find that they are not all that different from the men and women who seek abortion every day.

In closing, we must seek the mind of Christ in all things. Jesus never said that this life would be easy or that following him would be comfortable. In fact, no one knows this more clearly than Jesus himself. He was hung on a cross because he refused to compromise on the truth. If we are his followers, how can we expect not to suffer? How about you? Are you willing to take a stand?

“God has created Jonathon for Theresa I to love, nurture, and help him grow to be the best he can be. Looking back over the time Jonathan has spent here with us on earth I ask myself, “would I do anything differently?" "Would I have given him up for adoption?" "Would I have encouraged aborting him?" "Would I (fill in the blank)?" My answer would be no. Jonathan has taught me more about being kind, forgiving, and trusting than any other life lesson could have. Speaking4Him Podcast #147: Free Form Friday in July

“But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre, And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my LORD, and I know not where they have laid him.  And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.  Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.” (John 20:11-16)

Nashville/Smithville 2015

During the last week of June I took a road trip Nashville/Smithville TN.  I visit Tennessee almost every year and I always enjoy my time there. I usually go, spend a few days visiting with friends, and preach at their church. This year I decided to expand the trip by a few days and spend some time in Nashville.  My hope was to make ministry connections and get more done for the miles traveled.

Betty & Wally
When I first started planning for this trip, I had no idea how the plans would come together. Funding, traveling companions, and finally a car accident were obstacles which I watched God remove one by one. It was so encouraging to be reminded once again that I had friends and family in full support of what God had called me to do. In approximately three months I raised enough money to pay for the trip in full and still had money left over at the end.

My brother Nathanael, my friend Bob, and I left Grand Rapids at 5:00 PM on the evening of June 24. We rolled into Nashville at about 1:30 AM central time. We were tired but grateful that God has given us journey mercies throughout the trip. Despite the fact that I do not like to travel at night it was a relatively pleasant experience.

The first night was once again a test of trust in God’s faithfulness. As I alluded, to already I had seen God go before us in the planning and execution of this trip to this point. So when the hotel room was not what I anticipated, I should have rested in the fact that God had a plan. Instead I started to get irritated because in my mind there was no way I can go through Monday morning without a handicap assessable room, especially since this was a business trip and I wanted to be looking my best as I fulfill my business obligations.

After sleeping three hours the first night, we drove to Franklin Tennessee to visit the Wally show at Way FM. It was a blessing. The opportunity to meet people whose radio ministry had been a blessing to me for two years was amazing! The best part was they were just as genuine off mic as they are on the air each day and I found myself wishing we could just throw on a rerun and go grab but a bite to eat.

Zach
Wally and his entire staff were very easy to talk to and I enjoyed watching the organized chaos that is a national morning radio show. Afterword, I got the opportunity to interview Wally. It was very exciting! I look forward to sharing the interview in a couple of weeks on my podcast. If you have not already I hope that you will take the opportunity to subscribe to the Speaking4Him Podcast on iTunes or Stitcher so that you do not miss this fun and interesting interview. Wally is the real deal and when you listen that will come through.

After we were done at the station, we went back to our hotel and sought assistance in finding new arrangements for the remainder of the trip. At first it seemed as though nothing could be done, but soon they were calling around to other hotels and by that evening we had a new room at a different hotel which ended up feeling like a major upgrade. God had done it again!

One of the most amazing things that I’ve learned about God throughout my Christian walk is that some of his greatest blessings come despite the fact that I recently complained. And I am so thankful that he remembers that I am dust and loves me anyway!

The next two days were spent largely sightseeing around the area. Once again this is not my favorite thing and I would’ve been happier if the time had been filled up with ministry -related meetings, but God often puts us in situations to stretch is out of our comfort zone and into put others first! We visited the country music Hall of Fame and the Cheekwood Gardens. We also went to a Civil War Museum and a resale shop owned by one of the guys who host American pickers (although the resale shop wasn’t much to write home about). I’m glad I put aside my anxiety because each of these places was a fun experience.
Cotton Candy!

On Saturday night I visited with the Mahan family who are longtime friends.  Mr. Mahan met my dad in Bible School and is the Pastor of the church I would speak at the next day.  They picked up their daughter Rachel from the Nashville airport and we met at the Golden Corral restaurant. It was a good time of fun and fellowship. I hadn’t seen Rachel in years and it was great to catch up and reminisce. We even enjoyed cotton candy! I also met their daughter Christina’s fiancé. It’s such a blessing to see God working in their lives.

The next day was Sunday and we traveled an hour and so that I can preach at Faith Baptist Church in Smithville Tennessee. I really appreciate the saints of this church and their love and generosity is much appreciated! After church, we went out for Chinese and then over to the Mahan’s for more fellowship. It was a blessing to see all three of their children for the first time in approximately 16 years. It was very good to see their son Jon and to meet his wife and three children. It was a blessing to talk about our mutual love of the Scriptures and our Lord Jesus Christ.

The next day was Monday the 29th and we spent the day on the road.  We arrived home around 10:00pm.  I am very thankful that we had no travel related issues.  God is so good!

I’m not sure what God has planned for my future but this trip was a pleasant reminder that I’m on the right path! God never promised that life would be easy but he did promise that if I trust him he will direct my path. "Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass." Psalm 37:5  I can’t wait to see where he takes me next!
