Speaking4Him Podcast #135: Thanks, Mom!

I cannot tell you how much I owe to the solemn word of my good mother. ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon

Today Adam McNutt and I thank our moms for all they do for us!  We also look at some characteristics of motherhood from God's word!  Listen Here and make sure to honor your mom this week!

Note: The Omitted Verse is:
O-bservant
And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou gleaned to day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought, and said, The man's name with whom I wrought to day is Boaz.

And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the Lord, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinsmen.” (Ruth 2:19-20)

Speaking4Him Podcast #134: Jeff Veley on Solutions For Bullying

Are you aware that you brought a special needs student and the biggest bully in school onstage to volunteer with you?  For the last week our teachers have been trying to figure out how you knew to pick them.  Everyone was amazed to see that even the BIGGEST bully in the school couldn’t bully you when you responded in love. You got through to a student that we've all struggled to reach and showed the other students what's possible.  Thank you!”
- Jane Smith, Jr. High Teacher

What's a Christian to Do?

There is a lot of discussion today on social media and in other places about how America and other parts of the world are becoming increasingly hostile to Christians. This is not surprising, and is in fact predicted several times in the Bible. The apostle Paul puts it this way “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” (2 Timothy 3:13)

We as Christians need to be aware of what is going on around us and we need to be prepared to stand for Christ no matter what the cost. We also need to continue to proclaim the gospel so that others can find the truth and be prepared for his return. That being said, I feel the need to take some time to address what I feel is a disturbing trend in Christian circles today.

I recently saw someone on Facebook (and I know he’s not alone) imply that there is nothing we can do or should do to stand up for our rights. If we are persecuted, we should just rejoice that we were found worthy to suffer and move on. I think this is the wrong view on this issue.

While persecution is a very real thing both here and abroad and will only get worse as time goes on, I believe we as Christians often contribute to the problem by taking an apathetic approach in the way we respond to the loss of our rights.

Many people would say that Christians should not be involved in things of a civic manner because they should be gospel minded. I agree that the gospel is important, however if the gospel does not change the way we live our daily lives what good is it?

It’s true that there is a lot in Scripture about heaven being our home and this earth being temporary. It may be easy for some to infer that these passages speak against being involved in government or standing up for earthly rights. It’s worth noting however, that the early church was for the most part under dictatorships and had little or no opportunity to affect their government.

As American citizens, we do have a voice. I believe that only do we have a right to influence the public arena, we have a duty to do so. The Proverbs say “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” (Proverbs 29:2) I feel blessed that I can support candidates who have a respect for the word of God.

Another area in which I believe Christians miss the mark is that they often believe that legislation is a waste of time. To them I say if we are to do everything to the glory of God, shouldn't that include the way we legislate? I think so. I also think it’s important for us to know the law and to be able to articulate it well. If we are not, we can easily be made to believe that something we are free to do is illegal.

I am very thankful for places like the American Center for Law and Justice who defend the constitutional rights of students and others were simply embracing their freedom to live out their Christian faith. They have had a great deal of success, and we should pray that it continues.

Another common misconception is that putting forthAnother area in which I believe some Christians are weak is when they. godly legislation is forcing our religion on others. The irony in this is that the reason for most God honoring legislation is because we as a country fail to see the “self-evident truths” upon which this country was built. Those of us who speak up about these things do so because we want to get back to the principles of freedom that made America great.

I would like to put before you the example of William Wilberforce. He was a man in the British Parliament struggled with whether he should leave to be a minister of the gospel. He realized that he could impact people for Christ while making his voice heard in Parliament on important issues such as slavery. Because of this, Great Britain outlawed slavery about half a century before America did. I don’t sacrifice gospel because I love this country, rather I love this country because it was founded (in large part) by those who loved the gospel.

I believe that if we stay quiet on the important issues of our day we will be contributors to the decay of our society. If we do nothing we in essence contribute to a self-fulfilled prophecy. I believe that we can be agents of change much like Wilberforce was in his day.

While it is true that the world is getting darker by the day you must remember that we have been called to "shine as lights in the world;” (Philippians 2:15) it is time for us to shine brighter! There is too much at stake to do nothing. What is God calling you to do?Call

Speaking4Him Podcast #130: Cries From The Cross

“To some, the image of a pale body glimmering on a dark night whispers of defeat. What good is a God who does not control his Son's suffering? But another sound can be heard: the shout of a God crying out to human beings, "I LOVE YOU." Love was compressed for all history in that lonely figure on the cross, who said that he could call down angels at any moment on a rescue mission, but chose not to - because of us. At Calvary, God accepted his own unbreakable terms of justice.

Any discussion of how pain and suffering fit into God's scheme ultimately leads back to the cross. ”

“People have told me to separate myself from
being Jonathan’s sister while directing and producing this film. I don’t agree. Who else could be the best advocate for people living with disabilities than someone who lived right alongside a family member struggling with it?

I was there when my family got turned away from restaurants because of Jonathan’s disability. I was there when Jonathan was mocked and bullied. I was there when doctors told my family Jonathan’s value of life isn’t worth the procedures we wanted for him. I understand and that voice will
not be silenced.” Angela Peavey

Speaking4Him Podcast #129: A Post Christian Nation?

“I've lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing Proofs I see of this Truth — That God governs in the Affairs of Men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his Notice, is it probable that an Empire can rise without his Aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings, that except the Lord build the House they labor in vain who build it. I firmly believe this, — and I also believe that without his concurring Aid, we shall succeed in this political Building no better than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided by our little partial local interests; our Projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a Reproach and Bye word down to future Ages.” Benjamin Franklin

Speaking4Him Podcast #125: Thoughts on Christian Film

“Preachiness in films is always obnoxious, whether it’s from evangelicals or Michael Moore. People go to the theater with the hopes of being told a compelling story, and when the urge to get a message across trumps the need to tell a good story, the film suffers and the audience cries foul. They came for an adventure and they got a sermon. But this is exactly what many Christians think of when they talk about “Christian” filmmaking.” Mike Cosper

Do We Really Need an Alternative?

With the release of “50 Shades of Grey" this past weekend they has been a lot of discussion of whether Christians should see it, whether it should be canceled, and what might be a good alterative for Christians.  It got me thinking.  Do we really need an Alternative?  Allow me to explain.

One of the most frequent topics peppering my Facebook news feed in the past week is the contrast of “50 Shades of Gray” with the new release of Old Fashioned.  I understand their reasoning, and I think their intentions were good.  After all the world hates God and every standard the Bible puts forth, but I don’t like it as a marketing campaign.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to seeing it, but if it’s as good as people are saying, (since my friend Kevin is not easily impressed and he was, it should be) it should be able to stand on its own.  I think that we should produce content because we love our work, not merely as a reaction to what the world does.  In some ways, I think that even the idea that “50 Shades” needs an alternative is a wrong line of thinking.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when we “Christianize” everything.  Here are a couple of examples:

1) Bible Man

Even when it first came out, I thought it was unnecessary and (when I recently looked back) I agreed with a friend that it was borderline sacrilegious.  There so many real life heroes in the Bible that we don’t need a “Christian” fictional construct.  I like Batman and Captain America and there is nothing wrong with this as long as we are cautious about worldview.

2) Games

Apples to Apples is a great game but the Christian version is unnecessary and not as fun.  There is nothing wrong with taking a few cards out and enjoying the real thing. Scatigories Bible Edition and Bible Tri-Bond are two other games that while not all bad are basically redundant imitations of solid games.  We need to be creative and seek to come up with unique ways to engage the culture instead of simply copying the world.  We need to go on the offensive.

Along those lines, we also need to be committed to quality.  I remember several years ago we bought a Bible Trivia game.  My sister who was seven at the time was able to answer the Expert level questions quite easily.  I am grateful that my parents have taught us diligently from the Bible over the years, but to me this was indicative of a rush by the company to get a game on the shelves.

In closing, I like Podcasts and Podcasting.  I listen to many different Podcasts done by many different people on many different topics. I like learning new things and Podcasts are a great way to do this. I also host the Speaking4Him Podcast every Friday.  I do this not to offer an alternative to other shows, but because I have a passion for radio and have an opportunity to hone my skills and prepare for a job in live radio (Lord willing) and to share the message God has given me.

I am committed to producing quality, informative, and encouraging content every week.  Do I hit the mark every time?  No.  But my goal in every show is to heed the words of the Apostle Paul “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” (Colossians 3:17)  What is God calling you to do?

The Potter's House

Every August my family spends a week at Ao-Wa-Kiya, a Christian Camp in Shelby, MI.  I have written about it before.  It’s a great place, and I will always be grateful that we found this little piece of heaven on earth. I am so glad they offer family camp every year.

In August of 2011, I was (yet again) seeking ways to broaden my horizons for employment and began talking to one of the moms about The Potter’s House Christian School.  Little did I know how life-changing this conversation would turn out to be!

I can still remember that first day at school.  I went in to orientation wondering what to expect.  My biggest question was “What does being a Christian school mean to them?”  Was it an add-on or was it front and center?  Looking back over the past 3.5 years I can truly say that Christ is at the foundation of all they do.

It’s funny when I think about it now, but I still remember my tour that first day.  I will never forget meeting a cheerful Math/Science teacher named Emily and telling her “I am here to help in any way I can, except in Math and Science.”  I started working with her a few weeks later, and to this day helping her with 5th grade math is a highlight of my week.

I appreciate the fact that she loves the kids and the subject she teaches.  She actually makes math tolerable (which is saying a lot because as a student I avoided math whenever possible) and our running joke is that one day I may be smarter than a 5th grader!

Another joy of my time at Potter’s House is being a discipleship leader.  Encouraging spiritual growth in young men is a passion of mine.  It is not without its challenges and last year was very rough, but it grew and stretched me in ways that God had planned.  Because I had to reach out for help, I was able to deepen my relationships with fellow volunteers and some of the marvelous staff I get to work with!

I am so thankful for the gift of friendship and firmly believe that many of these relationships will last far beyond our mutual time at The Potter’s House.  Truly “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”  James 1:17

I am so glad God saw fit to place me at The Potters House and I hope to continue to work with them to impact kids for years to come!

Speaking4Him,

Andrew Gommesen
