And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." (Luke 2:8-11)

December 2015 Prayer Letter

Dear Praying friends,

It is hard to believe that we are at the end of another year. My prayer is that as you prepare for this Christmas season you do so in the spirit of thankfulness to Almighty God “who daily loadeth us with benefits.” Psalm 68:19 What a blessing to know that God is presiding over the affairs of men!
It is hard to believe that as I write this letter this semester is already drawing to a close at the Potter’s House Christian school. It has been a great year so far as we have been studying the book of Romans and learning what it means to be torchbearers for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It has been so encouraging to learn from the stories of great men and women of the faith. It is so important for us to realize that it doesn’t take super abilities or intellect to be used by God but rather an open and willing heart.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to impart biblical truth to young men of the next generation. Continue to pray that these young men will realize the need to lay a foundation in Christ which will serve them well into the future.

I continue to be blessed with opportunities to speak at various churches throughout West Michigan and occasionally (as was the case in June) to speak out of state. Please continue to pray for expanded opportunities to preach the word of God with boldness. If your church is interested in having me speak please visit www.speaking4him.com and fill out the booking form. You can also reach me at 616-262-7258. My goal this year if the Lord is willing is to preach 40 Sundays. I plan to begin posting 2016 dates on my website in the week between Christmas and New Years.

I am thrilled to announce that we are scheduled to post episode 168 of our podcast on Christmas day. I feel so blessed that God has allowed me to participate in this ministry of encouragement and exhortation for over three years without interruption.

The monthly ministries at the Kent County Jail, Rest Haven homes, and Mel Trotter mission are still going strong. It is such a privilege to work alongside members of my family and other friends to share the life-giving message of Jesus Christ! If you are interested in helping with Mel Trotter please don’t hesitate to let my brother Bartholomew and I know.

As I close I want to think the many of you who have committed your support both by your prayers and your finances to the Ministry of Speaking4him. Please know that I am fully aware that God never intended for ministry to be a solitary pursuit and that I think each of you for your fellowship in the Gospel!

I pray that 2016 be a year that draws us even closer to our Lord! May He give us eyes to see and willingness to accept many opportunities to share the truth of him who came to give "peace on earth and goodwill to men.” (Luke 2:14)

Speaking4Him Podcast #163: The Foods of Thanksgiving!

Inasmuch as the great Father has given us this year an abundant harvest of Indian corn, wheat, peas, beans, squashes, and garden vegetables, and has made the forests to abound with game and the sea with fish and clams, and inasmuch as he has protected us from the ravages of the savages, has spared us from pestilence and disease, has granted us freedom to worship God according to the dictates of our own conscience.
Now I, your magistrate, do proclaim that all ye Pilgrims, with your wives and ye little ones, do gather at ye meeting house, on ye hill, between the hours of 9 and 12 in the day time, on Thursday, November 29th, of the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and twenty-three and the third year since ye Pilgrims landed on ye Pilgrim Rock, there to listen to ye pastor and render thanksgiving to ye Almighty God for all His blessings.
--William Bradford

Speaking4Him Podcast #162: The Christmas Schooner

“I left the theater wanting to see other tales of Christmas traditions. We have been so saturated with 19th century England, with its images of plum puddings, roast goose, and holly, that we have lost sight of the many traditions that have infused our culture.
Although The Christmas Schooner does not go as deep as A Christmas Carol, which tells the story of a soul’s reclamation, it does present us a noble soul who quietly enhances the lives he touches. Sounds like a Christmas message to me.”
Sharon Kilarski, Epoch Times December 15, 2014

Whether or not you are a fan of Rich Mullins, you will be touched by this movie. September 2015 Prayer Letter

Dear Praying Friends,

It is hard to believe that the summer is drawing to a close. I hope that this letter finds you rejoicing in the faithfulness of God. I am getting excited about starting school again next week. I’m looking forward to an expanded role as a leader in middle school discipleship. I will also be continuing my duties as a substitute teacher. I am so grateful to be able to be a part of a Christian community such as the Potter’s House Christian school.

I continue to be grateful for the opportunities God has given me to preach his word. The opportunities at Mel Trotter ministries and Rest Haven Homes are still going strong. We are in the process of adding some new members to our Jail ministry team and I am very excited about that. Serving alongside like-minded brothers in Christ is a true blessing of life on this earth.

I would ask that you would pray for me as I am seeking more opportunities to speak and I’m also open to a ministry -related job that would complement my ministry well and allow me a more stable income. I am extremely grateful for God’s watch care over me but I am also mindful that wisdom is needed as I look to and plan for the future.

One area where I am hoping to get some opportunities is in speaking to Christian schools. I will be spending time in the next couple of weeks reaching out. Please pray that the right doors will open. I have been very thankful for the podcast ministry that God has given me and over the next several weeks we will be planning our Christmas shows. These are among my favorite to do because they are a major part of why Speaking4him exists. Please pray that God will direct us to the proper content.

As you may have seen, the podcast recently celebrated 150 episodes. Another exciting milestone for speaking4him is that this month we celebrate six years in ministry! Thank you so much to everyone who has prayed for and encouraged us over the years. I say we because this ministry is not about me but rather about him and also as a way to point out the fact that I have had many people working with me throughout this time.

Speaking of needed support, if there is anyone who would like to commit to regularly playing the piano on the second Sunday of each month when I do the service at Rest Haven please let me know. This is a great opportunity for service and fellowship and I would be extremely grateful if you would be willing to help me or if you would pray that God would lead me to a good person to fulfill this task on a regular basis.
As I close I just want to encourage you with the words of Paul “ Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” (I Corinthians 15:58)

What Impact Should A Christian Make?

Over the past week or so there has been an article circulating on the Internet published by Relevant Magazine called “Christians Shouldn’t Be Cultures Morality Police.” While I would agree to a point I think that too many “Christians” today take this to an unhealthy extreme. Because of this, what you are about to read may be one of the most blunt blog posts I have ever written. I do not wish to offend, but neither will I apologize for sharing the truth.

First of all, as I stated in an article several weeks ago I totally agree there is no way that we should expect the world to wholeheartedly embrace a Christian worldview. To do so would be foolish. Paul said “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” (I Corinthians 1:18)

That being said, it continues to amaze and grieve me the number of people who say they are Christians yet think it is okay for babies to be murdered and for marriage to be blasphemed. As I’ve said, supporting and loving non-Christians is not the same as a wholesale acceptance for their activity. It is 100% accurate that Jesus Christ spent time with sinners and that he often spoke very gently to the most despised people in the society in which he resided. It’s very true that he met people where they were but it is also true that he didn’t leave them there.

It is worth noting that in John chapter 8 in addition to saying “neither do I condemn you” Christ also said “go and sin no more.” Both of these messages are important. Also, while it would be wrong of us to expect total perfection on anyone’s part, it is also wrong to put forth the idea (if not in word and by implication) that Christianity can exist without the evidence of a changed life. If nothing changes when you become a Christian, what is the point and who are you actually following?

I have non-Christian friends who I love dearly. I enjoy spending time with them and when we are together I seek to encourage them. I pray for open doors to discuss the things of Scripture and also that God would open their eyes to its truth. I don’t bash them over the head with the Bible but neither do I shy away from what I believe.

Am I perfect? Absolutely not! But if perfection was the standard necessary to preach truth even the apostle Paul would be disqualified. He did not preach truth because he was perfect but rather because he was brought to the truth by the mercy of God and commissioned to share with others what he had learned. I firmly believe that in some ways there is a greater example to the world in admitting our imperfections (and striving to walk worthy in spite of them) then there is in putting up a false front of perfection. Ask anyone who lives with me and they will be glad to share with you my flaws.

As people’s lives change, so should their impact upon the society in which they live. It is worth noting that no society can exist apart from moral standards. Also Christ's followers didn't "turn the word upside down" by staying silent. (Acts 17:6)  I know many people do not like to think about this but whether you like it or not our nation was founded on biblical principles. Our founding fathers begun this nation on the premise that true freedom is found through responsibility. Today we have a large portion of a generation that want freedom but not the responsibility that goes with it. The result is chaos.

I think it’s amazing in the sense that we arrived at a point where somehow it is okay to step away from moral standards while holding to them is wrong. The Scriptures tell us that all life is sacred even in the womb and now technology confirms what the psalmist knew all too well. If you want to continue to carry a banner for abortion I can’t stop you but we are long past the time when you can call it anything less than murder. When our hearts stop beating we are declared dead, yet somehow in the society in which we now find ourselves a beating heart does not constitute life. This must stop!

I want to say a word or two here about homelessness. One of the points that is often brought up is that Christians should care more about the poor. I agree with this but again balance is required in our discussion of this issue. I worked with the homeless population at Guiding Light Mission for a year and a half and I can tell you that while there were a good number of people looking for a hand up there also were a good amount who I knew would stay homeless because they looked to be enabled instead of empowered.

We need to make sure that we are consistently sharing the truth in love. I know that many people approach truth in the wrong way, but that doesn’t negate it. Jesus didn’t die on the cross because he never said anything controversial. He died on the cross because people hated the truth and because it was the only way to deal with the truth that we are all sinners in need of a Savior.

My prayer for you is that you will continue to be steadfast in your proclamation of the truth while being loving to everyone. May God bless you all!

Speaking4Him,

Andrew Gommesen

Planned Parenthood Raises An Important Question: Do We Really Value Life?

Over the past several weeks we have seen the release of several videos detailing the behind-the-scenes work of Planned Parenthood. There has been an increasing outrage about this and rightly so. For too long we have simply swept to these issues under the rug. I believe that even pro-lifers such as myself can sometimes be guilty of not realizing the true atrocity of the practice of abortion.

I haven’t watched all of the videos but what I have seen has turned my stomach and made me want to vomit. I shared one of them on my Facebook feed because even though it made me feel physically ill I felt it was something that everyone should watch. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think you should expose your young children to this but I firmly believe that we often spend too much time in a sanitized bubble and fail to grasp the reality of what is going on in our culture.

Just before Jesus died on the cross, rose again, and went back to heaven to be with his Father he prayed for his disciples. In that prayer he did not pray that The Father would take them out of the world but rather that they would be kept from the evil one. (John 17:15) We as Christians have been left in the world for a reason.

Many people speak of the need to preach the gospel and I wholeheartedly agree with this. However I also firmly believe that our dedication to the gospel should lead us into action. It’s not enough to simply speak the truth, we must live it out. The Bible tells us to “plead the cause of the poor and needy” (Proverbs 31:9) and so I believe we must be engaged in the culture before us and stand up for biblical principles. When people ask us why we believe as we do it is the perfect opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.

At that point it is more than just convenient words to say but rather the evidence of a life lived out of conviction for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. There was a contemporary Christian song that was popular when I was growing up which said in effect “I’d rather see a sermon then to hear one any day.” The world desperately needs to see these living sermons!

This brings up another important point. As much as these videos grieve us as we see the world’s blatant disregard for human life (and they should), I also believe they should serve as a catalyst that will drive us as the church into a time of examination on our own attitude toward children. If we want the world to see value in these little ones, we must show this by example.

Sadly, it has become all too easy for the church to adapt to the world’s line of thinking about children. It saddens me when I hear people say that they are waiting for a “more convenient time” to have children or when my brother and sister in law are looked down upon because they have four children.

What have we as a society become when even within the church it seems appropriate to stop God’s blessing of children? I can’t tell you what to do about this issue. It is between you and the Lord. However I would challenge you to examine your motives. You may find that they are not all that different from the men and women who seek abortion every day.

In closing, we must seek the mind of Christ in all things. Jesus never said that this life would be easy or that following him would be comfortable. In fact, no one knows this more clearly than Jesus himself. He was hung on a cross because he refused to compromise on the truth. If we are his followers, how can we expect not to suffer? How about you? Are you willing to take a stand?

Speaking4Him,

Andrew Gommesen
